Breakthrough Leadership Program
What is a BLP?
BLPs are high school students who serve as leaders and role models to our rising fifth – eighth graders during our summer academic program. This is an incredible opportunity to give back to younger students while growing as a leader. Responsibilities include:
- Decorating the school to enhance Breakthrough spirit
- Co-teaching an elective class, such as dance, poetry, or soccer
- Supporting students in our after-school tutoring program
- Helping with lunch and recess
- Leading students in fun Breakthrough cheers
- Planning special events such as Field Day, Spirit Week, Community Day, and Celebration
- Creating our annual Summerbook
- And more!
Summer 2026 Commitment
Orientation
- June 15 – 18, 2026
- roughly 11:30 am – 5 pm daily (or 8 am – 5 pm for Level III BLPs), plus occasional evening events
- no Orientation on Juneteenth
Summer Program
- June 22 – July 31, 2026
- 10 am – 4:30 pm daily, plus occasional evening events
- no Summer Program on July 3
Other Details
Eligibility
All students currently in high school (grades 9 – 12) are eligible to apply, with preference given to current Breakthrough students and current or former Breakthrough volunteers.
Compensation
BLPs will once again be paid through San Francisco’s Opportunities for All program (OFA) in summer 2026. In addition, some hours count toward high school volunteer requirements.
