Learning at Breakthrough

The Experience

Breakthrough is not the typical school. Here, we have small classes of 6-8 students. The teachers are high school and college students - just a little bit older than you! They work hard to make the experience fun and unforgettable. Our courses range from Human Anatomy, where you might dissect a frog, to Literature, where you might create a play about a Gary Soto story. At Breakthrough, all students work very hard. In the summer, you attend class all day and complete two hours of homework at night. During the school-year, you come to Breakthrough in the afternoon for tutoring and enrichment. At the same time, we have lots of fun - we tell jokes, make new friends, and travel around the city.

My favorite things about Breakthrough are the friends and teachers. If you have any troubles, the students are more than willing to help you. They'll support you - they won't make fun of you. When you don't understand something, you can find the teachers at lunch. They'll explain it in a different way so you'll understand.

All of the students interact with each other.  Everyone helps each other if they have hard times in class. Teachers will give you advice on how to understand the homework or class work that we’re doing. I’ve learned not to be nervous to ask for help.
