This past Saturday, members of our inaugural ninth grade class returned to Breakthrough for the first in a series of Ninth Grade Workshops. They caught up with one another, discussed plans for the school-year, and sat down for individual conferences. Several weeks in, all the students are experiencing the real challenges of high school. However, they have a strong foundation and have a good support network.

The application is now available to tutor in our after-school program this fall, supporting the success of our motivated 5th-8th graders. All volunteers receive extensive training and ongoing support from Breakthrough’s program staff. The application is due by Fri, Sept 12 (SFDS students) or Fri, Sept 19 (all other applicants).

Breakthrough thanks the Giants Community Fund and the entire Giants organization for their investments in young people. The Fund supported literacy programming at five local nonprofits in 2014 - Breakthrough San Francisco, Jamestown Community Center, Mission Graduates, Raising a Reader, and Streetside Stories. The organizations were recognized at AT&T Park for Education Day last Saturday.

Breakthrough extends a special thank you to Binc, a talent firm for the tech sector. Binc volunteers visited our summer program on July 9, bringing plenty of enthusiasm as well as two laptops and 40 backpacks for our students, each filled school supplies, books, and a personal note. Along with Nextdoor, one of its clients, Binc also hosted a group of students for Breakthrough's Career Day on July 25. The students toured Nextdoor's sleek Mid-Market office and heard about opportunities in the tech sector and the importance of a college education.

What are you doing this summer? At Breakthrough, we're working hard and growing tremendously. This July, attend a Visitors' Day and see what our young people are capable of. All sessions are informal and include breakfast or lunch, classroom visits, and a chance to hear from our students and Teaching Fellows; they're held at San Francisco Day School - 350 Masonic Avenue in San Francisco.

One of the 68 volunteer tutors in our after-school program this spring is Alan Scott, a customer advocate at Salesforce. “I’ve lived in San Francisco for a couple years now, and I really wanted to figure out a way to get more involved with the community,” he says.

On March 14, our first-ever class of eighth graders opened letters of admission from high schools across San Francisco and the greater Bay Area.

Our 32 Teaching Fellows for this summer are now finalized. They were selected from a pool of nearly 400 and attend two dozen colleges and universities nationwide, from UC Berkeley to (farthest away) Dartmouth College.
