This Back to School season, Breakthrough would like to thank the San Francisco based company Meraki for its generosity in organizing a supply drive. Employees donated markers, pencils, notebooks, and other items that will be put to good use by students in our after-school and summer programs. They also wrote personalized notes to the students that will inspire them to keep working hard toward their goal of college attendance! Breakthrough extends our deepest possible appreciation to the Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation, which recently invested in our 2015 summer program. The grant will ensure that 144 rising fifth - eighth graders from across the city will receive high-quality, academically rigorous instruction this summer. Nearly all will be the first in their families to attend a four-year college.

Letters are in, and we are proud to report that 100% of Breakthrough’s eighth graders will attend college-preparatory high schools this fall, including some of the most well-known and high-performing district, charter, independent, and parochial schools across the Bay Area. Tickets are on sale now for this year's Raise Your Hand event - May 12, 2015 at San Francisco Day School. It will feature live jazz, delicious food and wine, and remarks from Breakthrough participants, as well as a keynote address by author and long-time educational leader Steve Bumbaugh. Our primary annual fundraiser, the event seeks to raise $200,000 toward Breakthrough's impactful work with deserving students and aspiring teachers.

6 Breakthrough ninth and tenth graders with an interest in science, technology, math, and engineering joined 7 seniors from the Bronx High School of Science for an inspiring brunch event at the Fairmont Hotel on Saturday. Thanks to Breakthrough supporters Borah and Sang Kim (Bronx Science ’88) for underwriting the event and for bringing all of us together!

Breakthrough is pleased to announce that this year's Raise Your Hand event will take place May 12, 2015 at San Francisco Day School, featuring a keynote address by Steve Bumbaugh. Mr. Bumbaugh has 25 years of experience in education, philanthropy and issues related to urban poverty. He currently serves as Manager of Breakthrough Schools: D.C. at the CityBridge Foundation in Washington, D.C., and previously led the ECMC and Specialty Family Foundations. His forthcoming book, The Birth Lottery, explores the long-term ramifications of childhood poverty.

Breakthrough students, family members, and tutors joined us last Saturday morning for our annual December trip to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank. Working together, they packaged over 5,000 pounds of oats for distribution to families across San Francisco and Marin.

In this season of gratitude and support for others, Breakthrough would like to extend sincere appreciation to SolomonEdwards, a national professional services firm, and M Squared Consulting, its West Coast affiliate. The company recently concluded a holiday supply drive, donating markers, pencils, scissors, notebooks, and other items that will be put to good use by students in our after-school and summer programs.
