With the admissions season nearing a close, we are proud to report that 94% of Breakthrough's eighth graders are enrolled in college-preparatory district, charter, parochial, and independent schools for the fall, with another 6% waiting on revised placements.

Breakthrough is seeking a few more donated housing arrangements for the outstanding college students participating in our teaching residency this summer. The dates this summer are June 7 - Aug 4, though part of that time can help as well.

Breakthrough seeks a part-time, year-round Development Officer for a summer 2016 start to assist with building our foundation and corporate giving program. Breakthrough extends a heartfelt appreciation to the many people who supported this year's Raise Your Hand dinner on Feb 10. It was a true celebration of our students, teachers, and volunteers, and of the supporters who make this work possible. Together, we raised approximately $225,000 on behalf of Breakthrough's hard-working students and aspiring teachers.

Breakthrough is pleased to welcome our newest staff member, Josh Shald, in the role of Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Josh was born and raised in Kansas, and began his career in education as a first grade teacher in Glendale, Arizona. He later worked on the Teacher Leadership Development team at Teach For America for five years, eventually leading a team of coaches that supported over 200 Arizona teachers.

Tickets are now on sale for our 6th annual Raise Your Hand dinner on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 6 - 9 pm at San Francisco Day School. The evening will feature a keynote address by Clemantine Wamariya - a survivor of the Rwandan Genocide, Clemantine now works to increase opportunity, bridge gaps between people, and inspire others to persevere despite great odds. All proceeds support Breakthrough’s programming with hard-working students and aspiring teachers. Please join us!

We served 192 students in 2015, from fifth to tenth graders, getting them one step closer to college. We trained 32 college students through our highly selective teacher residency. And, we engaged well over 100 volunteers in meaningful service, directly supporting our students' academic achievement. In all, it was a productive year.

We are honored to welcome Isis Espinosa, our new Program Associate, to the Breakthrough team. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Isis earned her bachelor's degree from Simmons College in Boston, where she majored in English with minors in Social Justice and Education.

Our after-school program has been up and running for several weeks now - since October 5 (for most of our students and volunteers) and since September 14 (for our eighth graders). Breakthrough students come twice weekly as part of their eight-year, year-round commitment to the program. They take part in one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions led by 63 wonderful volunteers...
