Growing up in Foster City, outside of San Francisco, Alyssa wanted to be a performer. But that changed as she became aware of the inequities at her large public high school and got a taste of the classroom, as a teacher’s aide in a dance class. “Those experiences really pushed me in a direction of education and made me feel like I needed to be on the ground teaching students, where I could make the biggest impact.”

Breakthrough extends a warm welcome to our two newest staff members: Rebecca Asch started July 5 as our Development Officer, while Trisha Regine Fuerte started September 6 as our new Program Associate. We thank them both for their dedication to this program and look forward to working together in the years ahead!

Thanks to everyone who attended our "Ed Tech in the Classroom" event on July 20.  The inaugural event of our Young Professionals Board, the evening raised over $3,000 in funds for Breakthrough's high-impact, year-round programming.

Breakthrough would like to thank Mavenlink for its generous investment in our program. Mavenlink employees recently hosted a supply drive, collecting a wealth of office and art supplies that our students and Teaching Fellows are putting to use in our 2016 summer program. Mavenlink delivers cloud-based software and services that redefine project management. Founded in 2008, the company has its Engineering Headquarters in San Francisco and was named a 2015 Cool Vendor by Gartner, the world's leading technology research and advisory firm.

Breakthrough thanks The Capital Group Companies Charitable Foundation for its extraordinary commitment to young people here in San Francisco. Breakthrough's 2016 summer program, just getting underway, will serve 131 hard-working rising fifth-eighth graders from across the city, while training 32 outstanding college students for education careers and engaging 29 young people in meaningful service. Once again, Capital Group is helping to make this work possible.
