Featuring Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson

 

Kevin Johnson has been Mayor of Sacramento, his hometown, since 2008. Known already as the "Education Mayor," he co-chairs U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's Mayors Advisory Council, and chairs the U.S. Conference of Mayors Task Force on Public Education. He also recently founded STAND UP, a non-profit organization advocating for excellent public schools. He previously served as CEO of St. HOPE, a community development corporation in Sacramento, and was an all-star point guard for the Phoenix Suns. Mr. Johnson holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California at Berkeley and is a graduate of the Harvard Divinity School's Summer Leadership Institute.

Featuring Scott Pearson of the U.S. Department of Education


Scott Pearson works on policy and special initiatives for the Obama Administration, including issues relating to innovation, charter schools, and school choice. He previously co-founded and chaired the Board of Leadership Public Schools, a Bay Area charter management organization; served as Vice President for Corporate Development at America Online; and was a management consultant with Bain and Company. He holds a B.A. from Wesleyan University; an M.P.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School; and an M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School.

Students at Breakthrough have an eagerness to learn, which inspires me. Breakthrough is able to push them to do their best work. I have worked with a student for two years, and her skills have grown immensely. Not only do I have the opportunity to teach this student, but I also can get to know her on a more personal level.
