Breakthrough Volunteer Receives Service Award

Sunday, May 27, 2018

Congratulations to long-time Breakthrough volunteer Justin Yamamura, who received the Fr. Thomas A. Reed, S.J., Christian Service Award at an awards ceremony at St. Ignatius College Preparatory School last Friday. The award is given annually to two seniors who embody the Ignatian spirit of "being people with and for others" through their long-lasting and meaningful service. It also includes a generous $1,000 contribution to Breakthrough. Justin is pictured above with Sasha Mungal, Breakthrough's Director of Volunteer Programs and Community Partnerships.

Justin has been a Breakthrough volunteer since his days as a seventh grader at San Francisco Day School. Since then, he has invested over 700 hours of his time as an after-school program tutor and summer Volunteer Leadership Participant. "Breakthrough students are some of the most motivated students I know," he says. "I have formed meaningful relationships with many of them and seen them grow into even more amazing people who will make a difference in the world. I am truly thankful for all they have given me.”

Justin also founded and leads the Youth Policy Initiative, a non-profit that encourages middle school students from across San Francisco - including many Breakthrough students - to engage in local and national political issues and make their voices heard.

Congratulations, Justin, and thank you for all you do on behalf of young people in this city!
