Our Programming

Breakthrough provides intensive academic enrichment and support to motivated San Francisco students with limited educational opportunity, and trains outstanding high school and college students for education careers.

Students

Kinsley-and-XavieditStudents apply to Breakthrough as fourth graders and make an eight-year commitment. Until their graduation from middle school, they attend our intensive six-week summer program, taking rigorous classes in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, and participating in leadership development opportunities such as outdoor education and college visits. They also attend our after-school program twice weekly during the school year, receiving individualized tutoring and taking enrichment courses in academics and the arts. During their high school years, students receive ongoing support from one of Breakthrough's partner organizations. Our goal is to send at least 90% of our students to four-year colleges. Teachers

teaching-experience1Breakthrough also operates a highly competitive eight-week summer teaching internship for outstanding high school and college students from across the country. Teaching interns receive ten days of intensive training, followed by ongoing support from experienced classroom teachers. Interns develop their instructional skills and experience the incredible challenges and rewards of the teaching profession. By investing heavily in their training and support, we aim to create a supply of diverse and talented future leaders for the education field.

I’ve never felt a sense of community and responsibility like I did at Breakthrough. I’ve never done something where I could so immediately see the results of the effort I put in. I’ve never worked so hard in my life.

- Renee Johnston, Pomona College 2012, former Breakthrough teacher

My students were growing personally and academically each week. Their dedication inspired me to work harder to ensure that they were getting something out of every one of my lessons.

- Bertha Romo, UC Berkeley 2012, former Breakthrough teacher
