An array of indicators suggests Breakthrough makes a tremendous difference.

Students
Our students make huge strides each year. An external evaluation, conducted in summer 2006, found they made statistically significant gains in reading, writing, and math fluency over a six-week period. By the end of the summer, they outscored the national average for their grade level, despite their socio-economic disadvantage.

Future years saw similar returns on our investment. In summer 2011, our students made average gains of 1.0 grade levels in reading and 0.65 grade levels in math on the Stanford 10 assessment. Their writing scores, meanwhile, increased by 31 percentage points on average. Learn more.

A longitudinal study, conducted by researchers from Stanford University and the American Institutes for Research, found that, years after their experience,  Breakthrough students spent more time on homework, placed more value on being smart, and viewed school more positively than a comparison group.

In 2011, the San Francisco Day School Board of Trustees approved an ambitious expansion plan for Breakthrough. We are now making an eight-year investment in each child, with the intention of sending at least 90% of students to four-year colleges.

Teachers

Breakthrough teachers undergo a steep learning curve. In summer 2011, they made average gains of 14 percentage points on our teacher excellence rubric, which measures skills like lesson planning and instructional technique. The opportunity to learn a craft while simultaneously making an impact has put our summer teaching position on The Princeton Review’s list of Top Ten Internships for college students for many years running.

The Stanford longitudinal study found that 73% of Breakthrough teachers continued to work in the field. In fact, 79% of summer 2011 teaching interns are considering a teaching career, while 68% are interested in educational leadership positions. Among the next steps for our most recent college graduates: the Citizen Schools National Teaching Fellowship; Teachers College at Columbia University; and Teach For America. Around the Bay Area, former Breakthrough participants are teaching at schools like Metropolitan Arts and Technology High School; pursuing graduate degrees at the Stanford University School of Education; and leading educational non-profits like Spark.

Breakthrough has taught me to manage time, be a leader, be confident, believe in all students, and to really cherish education as a tool to inspire.

- Jenna Paul-Gin, UC Davis 2012, former Breakthrough student and teacher

I’ve never felt a sense of community and responsibility like I did at Breakthrough. I’ve never done something where I could so immediately see the results of the effort I put in. I’ve never worked so hard in my life.

- Renee Johnston, Pomona College 2012, former Breakthrough teacher
