| Employees Give Back |

Breakthrough students spent last Friday visiting 16 prominent Bay Area organizations for a horizon-expanding Career Day. They toured tech giants Google and Facebook; delved into finance at Goldman Sachs and Conifer Securities; and wrote marketing copy for new fashions at ModCloth. Over lunch with the students, employees discussed their roles and the academic paths they took to get there, reinforcing the power of college in opening up opportunity. As Jaisey, a sixth grader, reflected, “It’s still hard to know what career to choose. But the important thing is to do well in school so you can be whatever you want.” A special thank you to our other wonderful hosts: Adler Colvin; AT&T; Barbara Scavullo Design; California Academy of Sciences; Integrated Pain Care; Kaiser Permanente; UCSF Medical Center; and Rocket Lawyer.

I’ve never felt a sense of community and responsibility like I did at Breakthrough. I’ve never done something where I could so immediately see the results of the effort I put in. I’ve never worked so hard in my life.
- Renee Johnston, Pomona College 2012, former Breakthrough teacher
Breakthrough has taught me to manage time, be a leader, be confident, believe in all students, and to really cherish education as a tool to inspire.
- Jenna Paul-Gin, UC Davis 2012, former Breakthrough student and teacher
