Into the Backcountry
In addition to academics, Breakthrough students take part in experiences that build leadership skills and social capital. Along those lines, our sixth graders embarked earlier this month on overnight outdoor education trips to Angel Island and Point Reyes National Seashore. They learned to load and carry a frame pack; practiced low-impact camping techniques; played group games; and returned with a newfound spirit of adventure and appreciation for the natural world. Special thanks to Bay Area Wilderness Training for use of their backpacks, tents, and other equipment.

I want to go to college because no one in my family has gone. I’ll be the first one.

My students were growing personally and academically each week. Their dedication inspired me to work harder to ensure that they were getting something out of every one of my lessons.

- Bertha Romo, UC Berkeley 2012, former Breakthrough teacher
